Physiological Standardisation of Digitalis with Special Reference to the Method Suitable for Use in India

SbvErai, investigators have shown that considerable variation exists in the activity of digitalis leaves. (1) Even those of the Official variety grown in the same locality have been found to differ in glucosidal content. The two chief factors which modify the activity of the leaves are: (2) heat and (3) moisture. Heat increases the activity by increasing the amount of glucosides formed, while moisture decreases the activity of the leaves through enzyme action. Certain ferments present in the leaves in the presence of moisture decompose the active glucosides. (4) Rapp has shown, that this enzyme action can be avoided by heating the leaves in an autoclave at 105?c. for 10 minutes. Heat and moisture being the two chief fac-
